Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
When can I start to learn how to drive?
You can apply for your provisional licence at 16, but you are not allowed to drive on roads until 17.
How do I apply for a provisional licence?
Simply complete a driving licence application form (D1) available from most post offices.
What are the theory and hazard perception tests?
They both have to be passed before your practical test. The theory test is a multiple choice examination of fifty questions on general driving skills, road signs and legalities. The hazard perception test is a series of video clips designed to test your reactions to real life driving situations. There is a test centre for this in most towns.
How do I book my theory test?
You can book online at www.direct.gov.uk/drivingtest or by phone on 0300 200 1122. You will need your provisional licence and a credit/debit card.
Can I start driving lessons before I have passed my theory test?
Yes, it's useful to have a few lessons prior to applying for the theory test. Your instructor will be able to give you some good advice and assistance on studying to pass.
How many lessons will I need before my practical test?
All our pupils learn at different speeds. Only when both you and we are confident will you be entered for your test.
What are "show me tell me" questions?
At the start of your practical test the examiner will ask you a couple of questions about how you can keep up with the maintenance of your car. Your instructor will teach this before the test.
Who is allowed to teach me?
Anybody who is at least 21 years old and have held a full EU driving licence for at least 3 years can supervise your private practice. It is ILLEGAL for anybody else other than a DSA registered driving instructor to charge money for lessons.
